| Laptop batteries come in 3 kinds - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They vary in price, weight and specifications. All highly advanced PCs have lightweight lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries which are usually pre-installed in laptops. These batteries are powerful enough to run laptops and accessories, such as mp3 players, DVD players and USB devices. They are lighter than NiCd and NiMH batteries and have not got any memory effect. If exploited in the proper way, lithium ion batteries are expected to work for almost 3 years, but it is important to clarify that the three-year period of time starts as soon as batteries are produced and not when they are actually deployed. A battery should be replaced or re-charged when the pc cannot operate anymore unless connected to the main supply of electricity via an adaptor. Below are several guidelines to prolong laptop battery's life. • Frequent full discharges of a pc battery shorten its life. Partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion batteries than a complete discharge. Recharging partly charged LiON batteries is safe, because there is no memory. Short battery's life in a laptop commonly hangs on the heat rather than charge - discharge patterns. • It is advisable to discharge a pc battery to the full after 30 charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less precise and in some cases will cut off the laptop prematurely. • Deploy coolers (widely available on the market) for the pc temperature to comply with the established specifications. • Consider removing a battery from a laptop when it is run on a fixed power. (Some laptop producers express concern for dust and moisture that gather inside the laptop battery casing.) • Avoid buying spare LiON batteries for later use. Pay special attention to manufacturing dates. Do not buy old stock, even if it is available at lower costs. • If you have got a spare LiON pc battery, deploy one to the full and keep the other one cool by putting it into the fridge. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the pc battery at 40% state-of-charge. Before using any device, remember to read a manual supplied. |
