| Everyone loses scalp hair known as alopecia. Baldness refers to undue loss of hair from your scalp. Heredity, a medical condition or even medication can result in baldness. Androgenetic alopecia is the commonest type of hair loss. It is the cause of about 95% of the cases of baldness in the United States of America. Androgenetic alopecia is observed much more in males than in women. Two factors must be present for it: a genetic predisposition and the male hormone TESTOSTERONE. Usually, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates the growth of body and face hair, but also diminishes hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, coupled by heightened levels of testosterone and DHT, increases the probability that scalp hair growth may be adversely influenced. Baldness occurs when lost hair outnumbers re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is shed. Androgenetic alopecia is considered a cosmetic issue. One of the commonest therapies to treat it approved by FDA is Finasteride (Propecia). Taken once a day in a tablet form, Propecia inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby preventing the shrinking of hair follicles. The medication is for men ONLY and must not be taken by females, since it can cause birth deformities. Generic Propecia, which is as efficacious as the branded drug, is low-priced and, thus, can be purchased by a larger number of males suffering from hair loss. At the end of two years' study 83% of males aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate treated with Generic Propecia were sensitive to the Generic Propecia treatment. The vast majority of men reported improvement in appearance. As well as other prescription medications, Generic Propecia may cause adverse side effects. In clinical studies, adverse side effects from Generic Propecia were rare and did not impact most men. A very small number of men faced certain sexual adverse side effects. Each of these side effects was observed in less than 2% of males. These side effects were impermanent and disappeared in males who stopped taking Generic Propecia. These side effects also disappeared in most males (58%) who continued taking Generic Propecia.
