| A great many users, especially businessmen, tourists and students, can hardly imagine their life without the laptop. It is portable and can be taken on board a ship to watch films or send/receive emails from co-workers or business partners. Nevertheless, the laptops cannot operate 24/7 non-stop. From time to time its battery needs re-charging. Hardly has anybody thought, when the first laptop battery was made and what it was like. In fact, the history of laptop batteries is an exciting one. They have been updated and upgraded a lot, but they still have a long way ahead before they become perfect. When we think of laptop batteries, many of us think about the rechargeable ones that we use today. Nonetheless, several decades ago AA batteries were extensively used in laptops. It took a number of AA batteries to run a laptop. Moreover, it could not run for long. Some users remember the heavy-weight lead acid based batteries that did not only last long, but also made a laptop extremely heavy. The production of laptop batteries has altered since then. Lead acid based batteries were substituted by lighter nickel cadmium batteries (NiCd). Yet, these batteries were not deployed long, because there appeared nickel metal hydride batteries (known as NiMH). They lasted far longer and were lighter. Their main drawback was the so-called memory defect they had. If the NiMH battery had not discharged to the full, it remembered it and generated less power than it should do. A great step towards advancement in laptop batteries production was taken when lithium ion batteries (LiON) entered the market. These batteries are much lighter if compared to other batteries and have no memory effect. They are installed in technically advanced laptops. Though LiON laptop batteries run for several hours non-stop, they require re-charging. Since more and more people purchase laptops yearly, the demand for durable batteries is speedily increasing. There will surely be innovations until batteries that never die are invented. Regardless of the purpose you use a laptop for, you know that you need a battery with a longer life. You have to know the battery will die when you need your portable computer most of all. |
