| "Home sweet home" is the phrase that frequently enters our mind when we return home after a very tiring day or a business trip. Since home is the place where we are always welcome and safe, where our soul has a rest in a pleasant atmosphere, where we bring up our children, share our joys and sorrows and spend a great deal of our time in. So, to make our home as comfortable as possible we should be knowledgeable about building materials we use to renovate our houses or to build our dream homes. The most important home building material is surely brick. There is a great choice of brick types which are used to build structural or veneer elements of a house. When it comes to stability and durability, the first building material which comes to mind is fiber cement. It consists of cellulose fiber material, silica sand, Portland cement, water and additives. Fibre cement is best suited for humid areas. Siding sheets are made from wet fibre, cement and sand. Stucco is mainly used to cover outside and inside walls & for adornment of the background of a wall. Despite of its obvious advantage associated with its low maintenance, stucco has a great number of unfavourable characteristics. Firstly, it is neither stable nor durable. Thus, any cracks or breaks which emerge on the exterior require to be mended. Second, it is sensitive to humidity and, thus, unsuited for using in humid areas. Timber is another general-purpose building material. It is generally used for siding of external walls and protects a home from weather conditions. When choosing a building material for siding, it is strongly advisable to think about its appearance, maintenance it will require, insulation value, price, sensitivity to weather conditions of your area etc. Consider vinyl, cement, aluminium g or steel for this purpose. Due to its durability and low maintenance, steel is selected by many house owners in the XXI century. More than that, it is fire-proof and can be recycled. Every home has a roof. The ideally suited building materials are fiber-cement shingles, wood shakes and asphalt shingles. Fibre-cement shingles are much heavier than asphalt shingles. Yet, the best roofing material is wood shakes due to their generally known insulation. There are 5 major types of kitchen countertop materials such as solid surfacing, natural stone, laminate, ceramic tile and wood. Laminate is considered to be the top option out of the five. Remember that buying suitable building materials for your home ensures that your house will be comfortable and pleasant to live in and will need (it is essential!) low maintenance. |
