| Thousands of people purchase some flowers for their loved ones every day – both on holidays or particular dates, and just to impress their loved ones. This simple gesture still represents one of the longest traditions in the human history. Flowers have played a key role throughout the history of mankind. Proofs of their usefulness can be found in different folk tales, religious texts, and myths. Different kinds of flowers were applied for food and continue to be used for food till present time; others have healing properties and are used as drugs. They were used by Romans and Greeks several centuries ago because people then believed that the scent of flowers cleans the atmosphere and decreases intoxication. Even celebrated military leaders famous for their severity and ruthlessness at war kept gardens of exotic plants at home. Owing to the high estimation of flowers by human society they became symbols of numerous nations. This way, a rose represents the national emblem of Iran, Honduras and England. Italy in its turn is represented by a lily, Brazil by a Cattleya, Japan by a chrysanthemum, Russia by a sunflower etc. The most significant function of flowers, however, is their capacity to arouse profound human thoughts and feelings the way no other thing can. These plants somehow embody tenderness and beauty. They are able to cheer up or to inspire on generous actions. A small bouquet in the center of a dinner table is a symbol of coziness. That is why women, and especially housewives, always include fresh flowers in their budget. But flowers are symbolic not only in this way. Each flower has its own meaning, and in this way it can help to express people's feelings perfectly. Flowers have been applied for centuries to send various messages. For instance, the red carnation means “my heart aches for you”. The recipient in her turn could answer with a cabbage rose (that means “I confess my love”) or a dried up white rose which in flower language means “you leave me cold”. Today the most popular way to say about the feeling is sending a floral composition of 3 long-stemmed red roses to the lady you adore. |
