| The handphone is an electronic device used for mobile telephony and data transmission over a cellular network of specialised base stations known as cell sites. Handphones are different from cordless phones which only offer a telephony service. Handphones have grown into the most powerful form of short- and long-distance communication. Alongside the standard voice function, updated handphones can support many extra services and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, e-mail, access to the Internet, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared camera with video recorder and MMS for sending and receiving pictures and video, MP3 player, radio and GPS. Handphones are used for a range of purposes, such as to keep in contact with friends and family, manage a business and have access to a telephone in an emergency. Some individuals have two or more mobile phones: one is used for business and another for personal use. Multiple handphones and multiple SIM cards are also commonly deployed to gain benefit from different calling options. For example, one plan could provide inexpensive local calls, another can be for cheap long-distance, and yet another for cheap international calls or low-cost roaming. Mobile phones vary from basic phones to advanced phones, such as musicphones and cameraphones. There are also smartphones that work as small portable PCs. The largest individual mobile operator in the world is China Mobile with over 500 million handphone clients. The world's biggest mobile operator group by subscribers is Vodafone having its headquarters in the UK. There are more than 600 mobile operators and providers all over the world. Over 50 mobile operators have over 10 million subscribers each, and over 150 mobile operators have leastwise one mln customers by the end of 2008. The chief handphone brands are Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, Apple iPhone, Samsung, Blackberry etc. Due to the quickly raising competition on the telecommunication market, buyers can choose from a wide variety of tariff plans to meet their budget and purposes. Contract mobile phone deals and Pay-as-you-go are popular networking solutions which offer cost effective tariff options. |
