| Everybody loses scalp hair. At birth, the average head is covered with approximately 100, 000 follicles - pouch-like sacs which produce individual hairs. Although the number never alters, the activity of each follicle varies as we become older. Undue loss of hair is called alopecia. It can be caused by heredity, disease or even drug therapy. The commonest type of baldness is called androgenetic alopecia. It is the cause of around 95% of the cases of hair loss in the United States. Androgenetic alopecia occurs much more in males than in females. Two factors determine this medical condition: a genetic predisposition and the male hormone testosterone. Normally, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT stimulates the growth of body and beard hair, but also diminishes hair follicles on the scalp, causing thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, alongside heightened levels of testosterone and DHT, increases the probability that scalp hair growth may be badly affected. Baldness is observed when the number of shed hair is larger than the number of re-growth or when the re-growth is thinner and/or shorter than the hair that is shed. Androgenetic alopecia is not a medical disorder; it is more a cosmetic problem. PROPECIA (Finasterine) is one the most potent therapies to cure it sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Taken once a day in a pill form, Propecia slows down the conversion of testosterone to DHT, therefore preventing the shrinking of hair follicles. Propecia is for men ONLY and must not be taken by females, as it can bring on birth defects. GENERIC PROPECIA, which is as powerful as the branded version, is much cheaper and, hence, can be purchased by a larger number of males suffering from hair loss. As a result of a two-year study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. The majority of males reported an increase in the amount of hair, a decrease in hair loss, and improvement in appearance. Like all prescription medications, Generic Propecia may lead to adverse side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Generic Propecia were rare and did not impact most males. A very small number of men reported certain sexual side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection and a decrease in the amount of semen. These adverse side effects were temporary and disappeared in males who stopped taking Generic Propecia. These side effects also went away in most men (58%) who kept on taking Generic Propecia.
