| The term 'mass media' is known to everyone. Everyday we consult the media sources to learn the latest domestic and foreign news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather. The importance of mass media at present is huge. Mass media shape and form customer decisions, introduce new goods and services, educate and make us think. Mass media play a significant role in shaping and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. Mass media strongly impact society, since it can reach a wide audience with a strong and influential message. They include four main sources: television, press, radio and the Internet. Each has its own features and functions. Everyday millions of newspapers and magazines are published around the world. The number of them seems unlimited. There are different national and local papers, dailies and weeklies, quality papers that cater for the better educated readers and tabloids that sell to a far larger readership. Some newspapers cover mainly politics, financial and commercial issues; whereas others cover upon 'human interest stories'. The advent of radio made it possible for a far larger audience of people to have access to the latest news. Radio is preferable when you are at work and require information or have to focus your attention on something else. Therefore, we ordinarily switch on the radio when driving a car to listen to news bulletins and news breaks broadcast from the spot. Listeners are especially much into phone-in chat-shows and music charts. It has been estimated that most people consider television their primary source of news. Our daily life is frequently organised according to the programme schedule. We turn it on to view our favourite series and talk-shows, to watch newly released films, music videos and news programmes. Whereas TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Internet allows us to have access to information and forms of entertainment 24/7. The Web contains large databanks of information in all languages. It is known for the selection of viewpoints presented, huge collections of soundtracks and movies, e-encyclopaedias intended to ease the search on the Internet, e-books and official sites of newspapers and magazines. Life without the media would be monotonous and limited. Still, 'addiction' to some sources of entertainment, such as viewing TV and surfing the Internet for hours, can badly influence health and interpersonal communication. |
