| Computer-aided design (CAD) is deployed for designing real and virtual objects. CAD usually involves more than just shapes. The output of CAD commonly must also consist of symbolic information, for example processes, dimensions and tolerances according to application-specific conventions. CAD may be deployed to design curves and figures in 2-dimensional (2D) space, or curves, surfaces and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. Computer-aided design is widely deployed in automobile, ship-building and aerospace industries, industrial and architectural design, prosthetics and others. CAD is also widely used to produce computer animation for special effects in movies, advertising and technical manuals. CAD is deployed for designing tools and machinery and for drawing and designing all types of structures, from residential buildings to the largest commercial and industrial structures, for instance hospitals and factories. Computer-aided design is chiefly used for detailed engineering of 3D models and/or 2D drawings of physical constituents, but it is also deployed in the engineering process. People that work in this field are called designers, CAD Monkeys, Automotive design Engineers and Digital Innovation Engineers. Computer-aided design is also a regular work activity for the traditional engineering professions. Computer-aided design has become a particularly significant technology within the scope of computer-aided technologies, since it is economically rational and time-saving. In the late Eighties when the Computer-Aided Design programs became freely available, there began massive redundancies in drafting departments of some companies, in particular small and mid-size ones. A CAD operator could replace 3-5 drafters still deploying traditional technologies. Besides, a number of engineers began their own drafting projects, hence the demand for traditional drafting departments vanished. As a result of, a lot of drafters became jobless. Since the advances were rather expensive, only large companies could afford them. Thus, small businesses were unable to contend against giants that widely used CAD. Now, hardware and software costs are reasonably priced. Even high-end software packages need cheaper platforms and some even support multiple platforms. |
